Know your frequent flyer benefits!

Day 1 – HKG – LHR (Hong Kong to London Heathrow)

Happy birthday  Sir!

(know your frequent flyer entitlements)

Spending your entire birthday on a long haul flight is not at all the best case scenario , however we learned today it doesn’t necessarily have to be as bad as all that! We arrived for check-in at HK airport and thanks to my husbands platinum level frequent flyer status (there are up sides to those endless hours of business travel far away from family) we get to check in at the first class counters- regardless of which class of ticket we hold. This is a nice little perk, it saves queueing times and as any frequent traveler knows all those minutes add up.  Add to that, the extra bonus that they will always priority tag your bags for you and you save even more valuable time at the end of that long haul flight, when your bags are in the first to come off the carousel. So, it is a good idea to research your entitlements if you are a member of a frequent flyer program at any level. Even the most basic levels will often have little perks for members. The airlines of course don’t always advise members openly of all these little perks, it is likely buried somewhere in fine print in that little “welcome to…” membership book. If you are an informed traveler though, know that these little perks are there and ask for them, they will happily oblige. Another little perk is being allowed to board the plane through the business class channel, again regardless of your ticket class- see another queue jumping advantage! Don’t get me wrong- I bristle as much as the next person when people push ahead  and cut queues at amusement parks etc , however , if you are traveling with children (which can have enough challenges of its own) why not take full advantage of all the niceties the airlines may offer.

Another nice complimentary benefit is they will often allow you extra weight allowance on your flights.

I hear you asking what exactly does all that have to do with birthdays ? Well, as I said my husband is a platinum level frequent flyer AND it happens to be his birthday on the very day we depart for our European trip. The lovely check-in lady smiled broadly , congratulated his advance in age and offered him a complimentary business class upgrade for the 13 hour flight!!!  So , if  you are unlucky enough to  spend your entire birthday on a plane and the ground staff don’t happen to mention it at check-in maybe remind them and who knows?????

This was an especially valuable birthday gift for DH as he had less than 2 hours sleep the day previous on a return flight from Delhi , so this allowed him the chance to recharge ahead of our busy itinerary.

The lovely girl also gave us passes to the business class lounge  for the entire family to wait out the hours before our flight….so I say…..happy birthday to us!

I hasten to add our little caboose (7 yrs old ) and sharp as a tack, immediately asked if we can pleased plan our flights home at Christmas on HIS birthday (20h December!) since he thinks he’d like the same, thankyou!

Introducing your cast and crew !

As  we embark on our new adventure  it occurs to me it would be helpful for you to be familiar with the primary players in our troupe of Global Nomads.

Darling Hubby (hereafter DH) is an executive with a multinational company working in a regional hub (Hong Kong) for the Asia Pacific region. He works very hard and does much more travel for work than any of us like and he is incredibly noble and patient to then get back onto the dreaded steel flying birds for our holiday travel adventures. Truth be told his ideal holiday adventure is lying by a poolside , maybe in Thailand, at some swank resort soaking up the sun, relaxation and a nice ice cold drink  in hand.  So hats off to Daddy that he is prepared to trek  the globe with the family in his free time.
Me, you know. My vital statistics are right there on the side bar.
Add to this our four delightful babes.
Dearest daughter  (DD hereafter) is 13 going on 14! She herds her brothers with style and flair. Honestly she would make any border collie proud with her herding instincts and ability. She is a total sweetie though and is always looking out for "the boys!" as she calls them- with varying degrees of exasperation in her voice.
So that leads us to the 3 youngest family members .
Son no 1 is 11 years old  and has a keen interest in history (particularly medieval england and ancient Roman) and all things computer related- quite an interesting combination I hear you say!
Son no 2 is 9 years old  and just loves to hang out wherever we go. He is the most cruisey, go with the flow guy you will meet. Just being in the same room as him can lower your blood pressure.
Son no 3 has recently turned 7 years old and he is our "caboose", the last wagon to our family train. He has, strictly speaking way more energy and and activity than could possibly be healthy and he also lacks a risk aversion setting.  Another interesting combination!
So we are about to embark on our Grand European Adventure, stay tuned.......

Tip 1...Tie a yellow ribbon!

OK, so yellow is not your colour, what about blue, green, red or as in our case, bright pink. Seriously though, whether you are a first time traveller or a seasoned professional, you will soon learn what those others know.....at the end of a long flight (and especially if it has been a busy flight juggling children and meal trays ) your bag looks terribly much like every other one of the 300 bags on the luggage carousel.  Not to mention that somehow when you are maybe a little tired after a long flight you really can't remember what the bag looked like that you had so lovingly deposited at the start of your journey.

This little trick  is not at all high tech, but we have found it works for us. I bought a bulk buy roll of bright pink ribbon (with white polkadots) and have a generous bow tied around both handles on every one of our suitcases (top and side). Since our bags, like all those others are non-descript dark blue or black it makes them instantly recognisable. We are not  wasting energy and effort scrutinising  every one of those identical bags and our bags almost jump off the belt at us.  Keep in mind that when you arrive at the destination you are not only "rounding up your little people after a long flight, but also concentrating on immigration, customs and transfer details. So something as small as a roll of ribbon can seriously buy you a whole lot of sanity.

How, when and where?

There seems to be so much material that would be relevant to families traveling with children, and I am sure that so much of this is just plain common sense. Sometimes though the most obvious details can get lost in the task of packing, planning  and logistics. Oh yeah, that is one of my favourite words. In my experience, travel with kids is all about L.O.G.I.S.T.I.C.S.

Many families who have traveled with children will have glorious memories of amazing travel, but I am sure that an equal number will have the horror stories about the “dream vacation” that just didn’t turn out to be what they thought or imagined when they had planned it, and so their memories were more of a horror vacation than a dream. We have certainly had one of those. That was a lesson we learned back in the early days with just 2 small kids in tow. More on that later………

Our greatest lesson then is to be realistic about what is going to be suitable for the ages and interests of the children. I don’t for a moment suggest you completely sacrifice the interests of the parents but just find a place that your interests and those of the children intersect. That way you will , as a family, have an enjoyable experience and make those valuable travel dollars count.

You can choose your vacation destination then customize the activities you do to appeal to both kids and parents. Even the most historic and cultured cities will have activities suitable for children. It is all about finding a balance of what is fun and interesting for the kids and what things you as adults wish to take away from the holiday.   Let’s face it, when you see the kids having a great time, you are going to be happy and have a great time too. If the kids are miserable and bored, remember they have the “power” to make you pretty miserable as well.  Maybe this means that some more challenging trips with more mature content are planned for years later when children are at a more suitable age.  A romantic Italian holiday taking in the gondolas and splendour of Venezia  could quite easily be a nightmare with a crying  hungry baby and a fractious toddler in tow. Whereas those same delightful children, combined with the same glorious destination  will be the ingredients for pure “magic” just a few years down the track. It is all about being realistic.

Call this an experiment in progress.........

It occurs to me that whilst we, as a family,  embark on our adventures and return home with loads of happy travel photos there is a bigger story at work here.
I  personally find the planning and organisation for our travels a pretty big task, but having been fortunate enough to be blessed with four great children then further blessed with opportunities for all kinds of travel I have , just maybe, through trial and error been able to pick up some knowledge which may be helpful for families about to undertake travel with young children.
Keep in mind there are as many types of travel, destinations and types of family undertaking that travel to provide material for an entire library.
So maybe this blog will last a week,  a month or years  but I plan , at this early stage, to try to share the lessons (good and bad) that this little family of wanderers pick up along the way. So take from it what you will, but most of  all "enjoy life's journey"!
